Protection and Recovery of Railroad Event Recorder Data

Passenger and freight locomotives in the United States are required to carry event recorders for collecting data that can be used in postaccident investigations. There are, however, shared management, labor and government concerns about maintaining the integrity, confidentiality and non-repudiation properties of the collected data. This paper proposes a cryptographic technique based on secret sharing that protects event recorder data while supporting data recovery by authorized parties.
